Extra Credit Assignment for the Fourth Six Weeks:

Need a little boost? Complete the following assignment and you can use it to REPLACE any grade you received on a formative assessment of your choice!

For this assignment you will have to step it up a notch. You will need to read a book (a short one)! I know! Horrifying!

DUE: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH, 2018 BY 11:59 PM.

1) Read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates--you can probably borrow a copy from me! As you read, consider the following:

A) What is Coates response to being an outsider?
B) What narrative structure does Coates use to portray his story? Why does he chose this structure?
C) What stylistic elements does Coates include to craft his unique voice?

2) Using Coate's work, answer the following question in and SAT style essay: What is Coate's central argument or theme and how does he attempt prove or convey this argument or theme? Please choose EITHER  argument or theme--not both. "Argument" means you feel that the book is more of an essay; "theme" means that you feel that the book is more of a narrative.

3) Turn in your essay to turnitin.com by 4 PM on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018!

Extra Credit Assignment for the Third Six Weeks:

Need a little help with your grade? Complete the following assignment and you can use it to REPLACE the grade you received on a formative assessment grade of your choice!

Third Six Weeks Extra Credit Assignment Due Date: December 15th, 2017 (Friday) at 4 PM to turnitin.com.

Read "How to Tell a True War Story" from The Things They Carried. Consider how the excerpt relates to Slaughterhouse-Five. Write an essay answering the following prompt:

What difficulty does "How to Tell a True War Story" reveal about telling true war stories? How does this relate to Slaughterhouse-Five? How does this illuminate why Kurt Vonnegut would write the novel in the non-traditional/non-linear fashion he has chosen?

*Please note that this short story contains some disturbing imagery and content about the Vietnam War and PTSD.

Extra Credit Grading Rubric:
You will be graded using the SAT holistic grading rubric.

Extra Credit Assignments for the Second Six Weeks:

For this six weeks, I have decided to offer TWO extra credit assignments. You may complete both, one, or neither at your discretion. Please be aware, no extra credit will be accepted after Monday November 6th at 4 PM. Additionally, be aware that each assignment completed may replace ONE formative grade, not a summative grade.

Best of luck,

Ms. Tuttle

Second Six Weeks Extra Credit Assignment (A)

Due: Monday, November 6th, 2017 at 4 PM--performed to Ms. Tuttle.

1) As we read The Crucible consider whether you believe John Proctor is monstrous or not.
2) Write either a defense or an accusation proving that Proctor is either guilty or innocent of being a monster. You must write this as if you are a character in the play and are about to give a statement before the court. You should attempt to mimic Miller's particularly 17th century (fake) diction, as well as his tone. Finally, make sure your statement includes your beliefs about Proctor's monstrosity, your justifications for believing him to be or not to be a monster, and a passionate plea for your case.
3) You must perform your statement before Ms. Tuttle. She will ultimately decide the fate of your grade, if not that of John Proctor.
4) Turn in your plea to turnitin.com by Monday, November 6th at 4 PM.

Extra Credit Assignment for the First Six Weeks:

Need a little help with your grade? Complete the following assignment and you can average the grade you receive on it with a formative assessment grade of your choice!

First Six Weeks Extra Credit

Due: Friday, 9/29/17 by 4 PM

Click on the LINK to read the chapter "Hands" from Winesburg Ohio by Sherwood Anderson.

This assignment is threefold:

1) First, you must read the chapter and consider the following prompt.

2)Then you will create an artistic work (from your field or another you wish to experiment in) which answers the prompt

3) Finally, you will write a short essay (it need be no more than two well developed paragraphs) which explains your interpretation of the chapter and how your piece conveys your answer to the prompt.

Prompt: What facet of his own person does Wing Biddlebaum, formerly Adolf Meyers, blame for causing his exile from his original small Pennsylvania town?

After considering this question for yourself, create an artistic piece which conveys how a person--such as Wing Biddlebaum--can misinterpret and internalize the reason for his/her exile.

Once you have created your piece, write two paragraphs which describe first what part of his person Wing Biddlebaum blames his exile and then how your piece conveys this reaction.
