Second Six Weeks Assignment
Due: Monday, November 6th, by 4 PM.
Need a little help with your grade? Complete the following assignment and you can replace the grade you receive on it with the minor grade (x1 or x2) of your choice!
This assignment is threefold:
1) First, you must read the chapter and consider the following prompt. Click on this LINK to read the chapter "Hands" from Winesburg Ohio by Sherwood Anderson.
2)Then you will create an artistic work (from your field or another you wish to experiment in) which answers the prompt
3) Finally, you will write a short essay (it need be no more than two well developed paragraphs) which explains your interpretation of the chapter and how your piece conveys your answer to the prompt.
Prompt: What facet of his own person does Wing Biddlebaum, formerly Adolf Meyers, blame for causing his exile from his original small Pennsylvania town?
After considering this question for yourself, create an artistic piece which conveys how a person--such as Wing Biddlebaum--can misinterpret and internalize the reason for his/her exile.
Once you have created your piece, write two paragraphs which describe first what part of his person Wing Biddlebaum blames his exile and then how your piece conveys this reaction.

First Six Weeks Assignment
DUE: September 29th, 2017 at 11:59 PM to turnitin.com.
Dear English I students, since I have been delayed in posting this assignment, I have decided to ask you to complete a task which is less labor intensive than a "normal" extra credit assignment.
For this assignment, I asking that you complete the First Six Weeks Vocabulary List chart. The final column is labeled "Use in a Famous Source". What I am asking you to do is find a quote which includes the word from that row on the chart; then, you must copy/retype to quote in the "Use" column. Please make sure that you use quotation marks, bold the word, and include the original author's/orator's name. For example, if I were to give a "use" for the word amicably, I might write:
"If this bill passes, it is my deliberate opinion that it is, virtually, a dissolution of this Union, that it will free the States from their moral obligations, and that, as it will then be the right of all, so it will be the duty of some, definitively to prepare for separation, amicably if they can, violently if they must." --Josiah Quincy
For each sentence that you include which correctly uses the word, you will earn four points. This is why I ask that you choose a famous quote. However, if you so choose, you may make up your own sentences--but be forewarned, this is the far more difficult and treacherous path. If you write your own sentence, follow the same rules as above, but include your name or "self" as the author's/orator's name. For example:
"Ms. Tuttle chatted away amicably with her pets; her friendship with and love for her dogs was clear from her tone." --Self
This assignment MUST BE COMPLETED INDEPENDENTLY FROM OTHER STUDENTS. Since this is extra credit and it will replace a x2 Formative Grade, I am asking that your work reflect your own research--so while you might choose a few of the same uses as your peers, you should not have identical sources. However, you will clearly need access to the internet. You may use the web, your parents, and any text (including the class texts) as resources.
When you complete this assignment, you will turn it in to turnitin.com under the "Vocabulary EC Six Weeks 1" Assignment. Happy hunting!
