THE HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS

February 13, 2018

Dear Parents,

You are receiving this letter because your son or daughter is currently enrolled at HSPVA in an English course taught by Mrs. Victoria Tuttle. Mrs. Tuttle will be going on maternity leave this week and we wanted to inform you who will be teaching your son or daughter in their respective course for the remainder of the school year.

Josh Inocéncio is a Houston-based playwright and performer. After finishing his Master’s in Theatre Studies at Florida State University, he returned to Houston to tour his solo play, Purple Eyes, across Texas. As a graduate student in Tallahassee he taught introductory theatre courses, and in Houston he has taught creative writing, theatre history, and Shakespeare through the Alley Theatre's education program (including students at HSPVA). As a lover of literature, he's eager to get into the classroom to engender thoughtful discussions and bring out the best in his students! Mr. Inocencio is spending time in the classroom with Mrs. Tuttle this week to meet the students.

In accordance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)/PARENTS’ RIGHT-TO-KNOW [P.L. 114-95, Section 1112(e)(1)(B)(ii)], as a parent of a student at HSPVA, you have the right to know if your child has been assigned to or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not hold an appropriate state teaching certificate in the area in which the teacher has been assigned. Mr. Inocencio does not currently have the appropriate state teaching certificate or permit.

Although Mr. Inocencio does not have a state teaching certificate, we do believe that Mr. Inocencio is qualified to teach in this position and he has been working closely with Mrs. Tuttle and the entire English department in preparation for the assignment. Our staffing decisions are made to provide the best qualified person available for each class. In addition, the campus administration will be evaluating every teacher’s performance in the classroom to ensure that your child receives quality instruction.

In addition to communicating directly with Mr. Inocencio at Josh.Inocencio@houstonisd.org please feel free to contact either Mrs. Alonso-Rodriguez (malonsor@houstonisd.org), the administrator over the Humanities, or Mr. Bingham (wbingham@houstonisd.org), Humanities Department Chair with any questions or concerns. We are excited to welcome Mr. Inocencio to HSPVA this semester and know that he will be an excellent resource and teacher to our students for the remainder of the school year.

Sincerely,

R. Scott Allen, Ed.D.
Principal
